5 Morning Rituals To Balance Your Day
by Lydia Bell
Mornings are a pretty hectic time for many of us. The minute we jump out of bed at the sound of the alarm, it seem as if we are stuck in a never-ending cycle of tasks, work, duties, and lists. This can result in us feeling drained and tired, even before the day has actually begun. This cycle can lead to exhaustion and in the long run, serious burnout. But how do we begin to incorporate balance in our lives, without adding on to an already hectic schedule? The best way is to start with small, actionable items to bring a sense of serenity and self-care into our days. These little habits can make a huge difference when practiced consistently, and in the long run, can lead to an overall increase in happiness and life satisfaction. Below, five of our favorite morning rituals to incorporate a little bit more balance and flow into our days as they begin.
Gratitude
The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless! People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to reflect on things they’re most grateful for experience more positive emotions, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and feel a boost in happiness and productivity. You can be thankful for the big wins in your life, but don’t forget about the small, everyday wins as well: that fresh feeling after it rains, enjoying a mid-day coffee or juice, someone smiling at you as you walk down the street. Simply jotting down 3-5 things you’re grateful for every morning will really help to set a positive tone for your day.
Set An Intention
Starting your day with a clear intention can help you to stay centered, aware, and focused as the day unfolds. An intention can be as simple and specific as “Meditate each evening this week” or a particular feeling you wish to see show up in your life, such as “I truly love and accept myself.” Mornings right after you wake up are a wonderful time to set an intention. Your body is refreshed and primed for a new day after sleep, so the morning brain is generally receptive. It’s important to intention set before scrolling through news or social media, as these tend to bring your focus toward negative events or comparison.
Listen To Uplifting Music
Music exerts a powerful influence on human beings. It can boost memory, build task endurance, lighten your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, and lower stress. Listening to your favorite upbeat playlists or songs in the morning is a great way to shift your attention to a positive space before the demands of the day start. You can listen to music as you get ready for the day, during your morning workout, or as a great add-on to a morning meditation or gratitude journaling practice. Up-tempo, fast-paced music gets your brain and body moving, making you amped up and motivated for the day ahead.
A Morning Walk
Many studies show that simply moving your body in the morning, outside and in the fresh air, can lead to a boost in energy, endorphins, and motivation. Walking in the morning helps clear our minds, encouraging us to exist in the present moment instead of staying in our heads. It calms worries and distractions, and helps us to focus and organize our thoughts. Morning walks have the added physical benefits of lowering blood pressure and preventing weight gain. The best time for a morning walk is early in the morning, 6-8 am, and on an empty stomach if you want to boost your metabolism. It also improves your sleep cycle, so you are more likely to get a good night’s rest at the end of your day.
Drink Warm Water With Lemon
Drinking warm water with lemon is a great way to prime the digestive system and add a little Vitamin C and antioxidants to your diet in the morning. Lemons are low in sugar, and contain Vitamins B3, A, E, C, folate, calcium, copper, and magnesium. Drinking lemon water also increases the body’s pH, prompting healthy cell function and strengthening your immunity. It's also been shown to boost skin health and result in a radiant complexion! The citric acid in lemon juice helps digestion, which aids in weight loss. You can infuse more flavor (and add a delicious health boost!) by including other ingredients like fresh mint leaves, a tablespoon of raw honey, or a sprinkle of cinnamon or turmeric.
